Start eight weeks out. Measure your new rooms before you decide what to bring, sort everything into keep, sell, donate or store, and book your movers four to six weeks ahead (six to eight weeks from November through April). Pack what you rarely use two weeks out, and keep a first-night box with medications, chargers, sheets and the coffee maker.
Most people moving to The Villages are coming from a bigger house, often in another state, and many are downsizing at the same time. That makes the move two jobs in one: deciding what fits your new life, then getting it here safely. This checklist is the one our crews would hand a friend. It works whether you are moving from Ohio, from Ocala, or from one village to another.
Spread the work out and moving week stays calm. Here is the order we recommend.
Get your new floor plan and measure the rooms. Start sorting closets, the attic and the garage. Request moving quotes.
Book your movers and confirm the date. Decide what to sell, donate or give to family. Set up storage if your closing dates don’t line up.
Schedule utilities, internet and mail forwarding. Arrange donation pickups. Start packing books, decor and seasonal items.
Pack everything you won’t need before the move. Label each box with its room in the new house. Refill prescriptions.
Confirm the arrival time with your crew. Pack your first-night box. Defrost the freezer if the refrigerator is moving.
Walk through the house with the crew lead, then do a final check of closets, cabinets and the garage before the truck leaves.
Most Villages homes are single-story, with open living areas and less storage than a house up north with a basement. Measuring first saves you from paying to move a sectional that won’t fit the living room.
Crew tip: Tape a room label and a furniture plan to each door of the new house. The crew can place every piece on the first trip, so nothing gets shuffled later.
This is where Villages moves differ from moves anywhere else. The lanai is a second living room for most of the year, so plan for outdoor furniture that handles Florida sun and humidity. Indoor wicker and wood pieces from up north often don’t hold up out there.
Many homes have a garage sized for a car and a golf cart, which leaves less room for shelves and storage bins than you may be used to. Sort the garage early and decide what truly needs a spot. If the golf cart is coming with you, mention it when you request your quote so we can plan the garage around it.

Downsizing is usually the hardest part, and it’s easier with a few simple rules. Sort every room into four groups: keep, sell, donate and store. If you haven’t used something in two years and it isn’t a family keepsake, let it go. Offer heirlooms to family before you list them anywhere.
When you can’t decide, store it. A mobile storage container holds the maybe pile until you’ve lived in the new house for a few months and know what you miss. Our senior moving and downsizing guide for The Villages goes deeper on sorting a lifetime of belongings, and our senior moving services can handle the packing, the move and the clean-out of the old home.
From November through April, The Villages fills up with seasonal residents, and moving calendars fill with them. Friday and end-of-month dates go first. If you can, move on a Tuesday or Wednesday in the middle of the month, and book six to eight weeks ahead.
Splitting time between two homes? Keep a set of everyday basics in each so you only move what changes with the seasons. Containers work well for the things that travel back and forth.
If you’d rather not pack at all, our residential packing team can pack the whole house or just the kitchen and fragile pieces. See how our residential moving service works from the first call to the final walk-through.
Book four to six weeks ahead for most moves. From November through April, when snowbirds arrive and leave, book six to eight weeks ahead, and even earlier for a Friday or end-of-month date.
